Most useful rule: if there is a realistic chance your downtown visit will exceed three hours, use off-street parking from the start. Moving to another curb space may not reset the timed-zone clock.

Why you may see 8 a.m. elsewhere: older City/Civic Centre pages still show an 8 a.m. downtown start. The City’s current main Parking page states 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Follow that page plus the signs where you park.
How Prince George’s Free 3-Hour Downtown Parking Works
This is not a conventional parking-meter system. The regular downtown curb benefit is time-limited free parking.
Hospital visitors: hospital-zone parking is different. The current City page requires registering the vehicle using the parking-sign QR code or HotSpot app.

Civic Plaza: How to Get the Patron Parking Benefit
This is one of the most useful free-parking options near the Civic Core, but plate registration matters.

HotSpot is useful for paid off-street parking and City permit applications. Normal downtown street parking does not require payment for the standard three-hour free period.

Prince George Winter Overnight Parking: The Rule That Matters Most
From October through April, on-street parking is prohibited between midnight and 7 a.m.
Parked at 10 p.m.?
A space being free in the evening does not make it legal through the midnight winter restriction.
Hotel guest?
Use the property’s parking or another confirmed off-street option rather than leaving the vehicle on the road.
Early departure?
If you need the vehicle before 7 a.m., confirm that the off-street facility allows access at that time.
Two separate rules: “parking is free after 5 p.m.” describes payment. “No on-street parking midnight–7 a.m. October–April” describes legality. One does not cancel the other.
Driveway, Hydrant and Crosswalk Parking Rules
Driveway: 1.5 metres
Do not park directly in front of or within 1.5 metres of a driveway.
Fire hydrant: 5 metres
Leave at least five metres of clearance from a hydrant.
Stop sign: 6 metres
Do not park within six metres on the approach side of a stop sign or traffic-control signal.
Crosswalk: 6 metres
Keep six metres clear on the approach or leaving side of a crosswalk.
Yellow curb
A yellow-painted curb is not an ordinary public parking space.
24-hour road rule
City neighbourhood guidance says vehicles must not remain on a road for more than 24 consecutive hours.

During large Civic Core events, the closest lot can fill before the surrounding parking supply does.

Plaza Parkade and surrounding municipal lots give you an alternative without repeatedly circling the Civic Plaza.
400-metre walking radius
A January 2026 City event notice said multiple on- and off-street options are available within roughly 400 metres of Canfor Leisure Pool.
Evening events
City lots become especially useful after 5 p.m. because regular municipal parking is free during the evening period.
Local event strategy: decide your backup lot before driving downtown. If Civic Plaza is full, go directly to the backup instead of joining the queue around the closest block.

Write down the arrival time
Free three-hour parking is easy to forget because there is no normal meter countdown beside the vehicle.
Do not reset the clock mentally
Moving from one downtown curb space to another does not necessarily give another three hours.
