Get the Right Austin Parking Permit Without Guessing the Process
Austin uses Residential Permit Parking in selected neighborhoods. Therefore, your address must be inside an eligible RPP area before you can buy a normal resident permit. In addition, permit type, vehicle registration, renewal date, and visitor needs can affect which option fits your household.
PERMIT BASE PRICE
Quick Answer: How Austin Parking Permits Work
First, check whether your address is inside an Austin Residential Permit Parking zone. A normal resident permit is not available simply because you live somewhere in Austin.
Next, confirm what your household can purchase. Eligible residences can generally buy up to four resident vehicle permits and up to two visitor hangtags. However, Mueller has a lower overall permit limit.
Resident vehicle permits are digital and connect to a license plate. Visitor permits work differently because they are physical hangtags.
Finally, gather your proof of residency and vehicle documents. Then, follow the current City application process.
Three Things to Know Before Applying
Your Street Must Qualify
Check the City’s permit eligibility listing before you begin.
Resident Permits Are Digital
Each qualifying resident vehicle permit connects to a specific license plate.
Hangtags Are Separate
Visitor permits are physical hangtags rather than resident license-plate permits.
What Is Austin Residential Permit Parking?
Austin created the Residential Permit Parking program to reduce heavy non-resident parking on qualifying residential streets. In particular, the program is useful near commercial areas and destinations that attract commuter parking.
Resident-Only Parking Periods
RPP streets use posted restrictions during designated days and times. Therefore, non-permitted vehicles may be restricted during those periods.
Outside the posted restriction, the street may follow normal parking rules. Consequently, always read the sign instead of assuming the permit rule applies 24 hours a day.
Revised Rules Took Effect in 2025
Austin’s revised RPP rules became effective on July 16, 2025. As a result, older permit articles may contain outdated prices, limits, or application details.
Who Is Eligible for an Austin Parking Permit?
Eligibility starts with the street or zone. Therefore, check the City’s RPP eligibility listing before collecting documents or paying for a permit.
Proof of Residency
Applicants must show that they are an owner, property manager, or current resident of the qualifying address.
Austin accepts several forms of proof. For example, an applicant can use a valid driver’s license, current property tax statement, voter registration card, qualifying lease, or recent utility bill.
A utility bill must currently be dated within 30 days of the request. In addition, the document needs to show the property address.
Rules for Tenants
Tenants can use an executed lease between the owner or agent and the tenant. However, the applicant must be named on that lease.
Subleases are not accepted under the current program rules. Therefore, a subtenant may need to discuss eligibility directly with Mobility Services.
Vehicle Requirements
A resident vehicle permit requires valid insurance. The vehicle must also have current Texas registration at the qualifying residence address.
In addition, applicants and vehicle owners must not have unpaid or unresolved parking citations.
Austin Parking Permit Prices for 2026
Austin uses tiered pricing for yearly resident permits. Therefore, each additional resident vehicle permit costs more than the previous one.
Resident Vehicle Permit Prices
Current Prices With Tax
| Permit | Price | Key Detail |
|---|---|---|
| 1st Resident Permit | $64.95 with tax | $60 base price |
| 2nd Resident Permit | $75.78 with tax | $70 base price |
| 3rd Resident Permit | $86.60 with tax | $80 base price |
| 4th Resident Permit | $97.43 with tax | $90 base price |
| Visitor Hangtag | $97.43 with tax | $90 base price for each hangtag |
How Many Austin Parking Permits Can a Household Get?
The normal program limit allows up to four resident vehicle permits. In addition, a qualifying residence can purchase up to two visitor hangtag permits.
Resident Vehicle Permits
Each resident permit is assigned to one qualifying vehicle. Therefore, the permit follows the registered license plate rather than a movable windshield decal.
Visitor Hangtags
Visitor permits are physical hangtags. A residence can normally purchase no more than two yearly visitor permits.
Mueller Has a Different Limit
Mueller residences remain limited to two permits total. That maximum can use any combination of resident and visitor permits.
For this reason, Mueller residents should check their exact eligibility before assuming the normal four-resident-plus-two-visitor structure applies.
Austin Visitor Parking Permits
Visitor parking is useful when friends, relatives, caregivers, or other guests need to park during RPP enforcement hours. However, visitors need the correct permit for the zone.
Yearly Visitor Hangtags
Austin currently allows up to two visitor hangtags for an eligible RPP residence. Each yearly visitor permit has a $90 base price.
Unlike a resident permit, the hangtag is not tied permanently to one resident license plate. Therefore, it can be useful for different qualifying visitors.
Day Passes
Austin also offers scratch-off day passes. Each pass currently costs $5 plus sales tax.
A day pass is valid for 24 hours. However, the residence must already have purchased yearly permits to qualify for day passes.
Day Pass Limits
An eligible residence can use up to 20 passes per event. In addition, the current program allows six events per year.
Therefore, day passes are useful for occasional gatherings. They are not designed as unlimited visitor parking.
Austin Parking Permit Renewal Dates
Austin uses two different RPP renewal periods. Therefore, your expiration date depends on the zone or color district.
Orange Area Around the University of Texas
Orange-area permits expire on July 31 each year. This area covers the neighborhood around the University of Texas campus.
All Other RPP Color Areas
Other color-area permits expire on December 31. Therefore, most participating neighborhoods use the end-of-year renewal cycle.
There Is No Grace Period
Austin specifically encourages residents to renew before expiration. Importantly, the program does not provide a grace period.
How to Apply for an Austin Parking Permit
The application becomes easier when you check eligibility first. Therefore, do not start with payment.
Step 1: Check Your Address
Start with Austin’s Residential Parking Permit eligibility listing. Confirm the zone, restrictions, and permit allowance for your address.
Step 2: Gather Proof of Residency
Next, prepare an accepted document that shows the qualifying address. A recent utility bill, driver’s license, tax statement, voter card, or qualifying lease may work.
Step 3: Prepare Vehicle Documents
Resident permits require qualifying vehicle information. Therefore, confirm current Texas registration and valid insurance.
Step 4: Check Outstanding Citations
Applicants and vehicle owners must not have unresolved parking citations. Resolve any qualifying issue before completing the permit request.
Step 5: Submit the Application
Finally, follow the current City purchase or in-person process. Review all details before paying.

Hybrid Parking Area Permit Discount
Some Austin streets combine Residential Permit Parking with Pay-to-Park controls. These locations are called Hybrid Parking Areas.
Two Resident Permits Can Be Free
Eligible residences inside a Hybrid Parking Area can request two RPP resident vehicle permits at no cost.
However, the benefit does not include visitor hangtags. Therefore, visitor permits still follow the normal visitor pricing.
CAP Discounts for Austin Parking Permits
Qualifying participants in Austin Energy’s Customer Assistance Program, or CAP, can receive reduced RPP pricing.
Resident Vehicle Permit Discount
Up to two qualifying resident vehicle permits currently cost $20 each under the CAP discount.
Visitor Hangtag Discount
A qualifying CAP visitor hangtag currently costs $30. Sales tax still applies.
Residential Construction Parking Passes
Construction projects can create a temporary parking need. Therefore, Austin offers a separate RPP construction pass.
Who Can Use a Construction Pass?
The pass is intended for workers’ vehicles during construction at the participating residence.
However, the program does not use this pass for signed commercial vehicles as defined by City rules.
How Many Passes Are Available?
A participating RPP address can receive up to three construction passes at one time.
How Long Does a Pass Last?
Each pass is tied to a specific address. The current validity period is 45 consecutive calendar days.
Longer projects need additional passes in 45-day increments. Therefore, plan ahead if construction will continue for several months.
Rules for Larger Apartment and Multi-Unit Properties
Austin treats some large residential properties differently. In particular, properties with seven or more residential units have limited permit eligibility.
Day Pass Eligibility
Under the current program, multi-unit properties with seven or more units are eligible only for day passes.
Non-residential land uses are also limited to day-pass eligibility. Therefore, these properties should not assume normal yearly resident permit rules apply.
Can Residents Request a New RPP Zone?
Yes. Austin allows qualifying residents to request a new Residential Permit Parking zone.
Start With Mobility Services
First, discuss the street with Austin Transportation and Public Works. Staff will review whether the location may qualify.
Application Fee
The current application fee for a new RPP zone is $350. After the application starts, City staff provide the petition process.
Resident Support Requirement
Most applications need a 66% majority to advance. The petition must also be completed within 90 days.
Parking Study Requirement
If the support threshold is met, City staff conduct a parking study. The study currently requires at least 75% occupancy in legal parking spaces.
In addition, at least 50% of the measured traffic must come from non-resident commuter parking for the current program criteria.
Final Approval
Austin’s Area Traffic Engineer reviews the qualifying study. If approved, the City installs signs for the new zone.
Enforcement normally begins about two weeks after sign installation.
What if an Austin Parking Permit Is Lost?
Report a lost permit to the City. A replacement can involve additional fees.
Do Not Reuse a Replaced Permit
If the old permit is later found, do not start using it again. The City says a replaced permit is no longer valid.
Consequently, using the old permit can result in a citation.
Check the Current Replacement Cost
Austin’s current fee schedule lists a $12 permit replacement fee before applicable tax in relevant RPP situations.
However, replacement pricing can depend on the permit situation. Therefore, confirm the final amount with Mobility Services.
Does an Austin Parking Permit Guarantee a Space?
No. A residential permit gives qualifying parking privileges in the applicable zone.
However, it does not reserve a particular curb space. Available parking can still depend on demand.
Other Street Rules Still Apply
A permit also does not override general parking rules. For example, you cannot block a driveway or park beside a hydrant.
Likewise, bike-lane and sidewalk restrictions still apply. Therefore, read the street before leaving the vehicle.
What if You Get a Ticket With a Valid Permit?
A valid permit does not automatically prevent every parking citation. The violation may involve another rule or an enforcement mismatch.
Check the Citation First
Review the violation code, license plate, date, and location. Then, compare those details with your permit information.
Keep Permit Records
Save purchase confirmations and permit details. In addition, take useful photos when a street sign or vehicle position is relevant.
Parking Disputes Go Through Municipal Court
Austin directs parking disputes to Austin Municipal Court. Therefore, use the court’s current process instead of assuming Mobility Services can simply cancel the citation.
Austin Parking Permit Application Checklist
A short document check can prevent an unnecessary second application. Therefore, review these items before submitting your request.

A residential permit solves only one part of parking in Austin. Therefore, use a broader downtown guide when you need public street parking, garages, meter pricing, or visitor options.
Official Austin Parking Permit Resources
This guide explains the permit process in plain English. However, Austin Transportation and Public Works should be the final source for current eligibility, prices, and application requirements.
Residential Permit Parking Program
The City’s main RPP page covers eligibility, prices, day passes, renewal periods, visitor permits, construction passes, and applications.
Right-of-Way Parking Permits
Residential RPP permits are not the same as permits used to reserve curb space for construction, events, or other right-of-way needs.
Therefore, businesses and project applicants should use the separate City right-of-way process when that permit fits the activity.
